Abstract: Needle coke was a kind of widely used artificial carbon material, which was usually used as the raw material for the production of ultra-high power graphite electrode and lithium-ion anode graphite materials. The quality of needle coke was generally affected by the basic physical properties of raw materials, and the quality of needle coke have great affects on properties of its' derived graphite materials. In order to further investigate the feasibility of preparing high quality needle coke from aromatic heavy oil, the kilogram grade experiment was carried out in a delayed coking plant with Mixed oil (MO) and distillate of ethylene oil (EPO) as raw materials, respectively. The molecular structure and pyrolysis characteristics of the heavy oils were characterized by FTIR and TGA analysis, respectively. The parameters include optical microstructure, surface morphology, crystal structure, form of microcrystalline existence and conductivity the properties have been used to judge the property of derived needle coke. The results have shown that, the aromatic index (Iar) of MO and EPO were 0.592 7 and 0.569 4, the branched index (CH3/CH2) were 0.351 6 and 0.228 3, respectively. The content of fibrous structure in the derived needle coke (MO-Coke and EPO-Coke) obtained from the delayed coking of MO and EPO were 47.68% and 57.40%, respectively. The surfaces of these two needle cokes were presented as smooth and graphite-like lamellar structures. What's more, the lateral sizes of MO-Coke and EPO-Coke were 2.73 nm and 3.50 nm, the ideal graphitic lattice content reached 10.58% and 16.43%, the resistivity of MO-Coke and EPO-Coke were only 489 μΩ·m and 471 μΩ·m, respectively. In other words, both of the aromatic heavy oils (MO and EPO) were the promising raw materials to produce high quality needle coke.
