Collagen-based Biomaterials with Applications in Medical Cosmetology:a Review

Abstract: Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals, accounting for about 70% of human skin. It is also the main component of the extracellular matrix, exerting an important impact on skin elasticity, gloss, pores, and moisture. As a natural polymer material, collagen has the characteristics of low antigenicity, absorbability, degradability, whitening, moisturizing, and filling repair. Products developed based on natural collagen, hydrolyzed collagen, and recombinant human collagen can meet the treatment needs of different patients and different diseases. In addition, the products have been widely used in the field of plastic and aesthetic medicine. While pure collagen has poor hydrothermal stability, enzymatic hydrolysis resistance, and mechanical properties, blending it with natural polymer materials to prepare composites can make up for the shortcomings of a single component and combine the advantages of multiple materials. This constitutes one of the research hotspots of collagen-based biome-dical materials. In this study, the research progress of collagen in the field of medical cosmetology at home and abroad was described. The molecular structures, preparation methods, and functional properties of collagen, hydrolyzed collagen, and recombinant human collagen were introduced. The performance improvement and mechanism of collagen composites for raw material defects of pure collagen materials were analyzed. The applications of collagen-based biomaterials in injection medical beauty, artificial skin, collagen dressing, and daily cosmetics were listed. The existing problems with collagen-based materials and their future development prospects were pointed out, in order to provide references for the development and clinical applications of collagen-based biological materials in the field of medical cosmetology.
