Improving the Pavement Performance of Cold-mix Epoxy Resin Mixture by Adding Active Toughening Agent

Abstract: Due to high performance cold-mix epoxy resin has been an urgent need for quick maintenance of steel bridge deck pavement, in this paper, epoxy resin was modified by adding active toughening agent (RTA), and hardener was used to cure the modified epoxy resin at room temperature. The effect of RTA dosages and hardener types were analyzed by means of tensile test, DSC test, reaction temperature test and visco-sity test, and furthermore, two kinds of cold-mix epoxy resin (CE) were selected to verify the road performance of the mixture. The results show that the addition of RTA can significantly improve the fracture elongation and microstructure of CE. The CE cured with G1 and G2 hardener can meet the demand of workability during construction. The road performance of Z15 and Z15-G2 cold-mix epoxy resin mixture (CEM) was equivalent to hot-mix epoxy asphalt mixture (HEAM) and warm-mix epoxy asphalt mixture (WEAM). However, the low temperature crack resistance and four-point bending fatigue properties of CEM were much better than HEAM and WEAM.
