The Development of Chromium-free Zinc-Aluminum Coating

Abstract: Dacromet coating has been widely used in automobile, railway, construction, bridge and other fields for its excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance and no hydrogen embrittlement abilities. However, traditional Dacromet coating is still facing some problems, such as carcinogenic Cr6+, low relative hardness, poor scratch resistance and wear resistance. In order to adapt to the increasingly strict environmental protection policy and meet the application requirements of Dacromet coating with higher performance in protection, developing a green and high performance of chromium-free zinc-aluminum coating has become an urgent and important thing. Therefore, based on the material science foundation of Dacromet coating, this paper reviews two aspects. One is the transformation from traditional Dacromet coating to chromium-free zinc-aluminum coating, the other is the research and application status of chromium-free zinc-aluminum coating at home and abroad. The purpose of this paper is to effectively promote the innovation and development of this surface coating technology and point out the direction of development for a new Zn-Al coating which is reliable, efficient and environment friendly.
