Abstract: Ductile cast iron is a ferrous alloy characterized by carbon-rich phase in the form of spheroidal, and usually be cladding welded with dissimilar materials to obtain the good surface performance. Complex process is required when welding dissimilar materials, for there are obstacles will be introduced by the different physical and chemical properties of the two dissimilar materials when welding them together. The most effective way to solve this problem is to reduce the heat input in welding process as much as possible. In this study, the CMT welding has been carried out to study the cladding welding on nodular cast iron QT400 by a feeding material of H08Mn2Si which is commonly used in carbon steel welding. The related phase transformation and migration of different elements across the partially melted zone (PMZ) have been investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to determine the microstructure and phase composition of the cladding layer and interfaces. Micro-hardness of the samples was evaluated after CMT cladding welding. The results reveal that CMT welding can primely realize the cladding welding on nodular cast iron with the feeding wire of H08Mn2Si. In addition, the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the overlaying welding seam is relatively small, and the transition of the major chemical elements and microhardness across the interface is relatively smooth. This study will expand the application fields of CMT welding and promote the development of ductile cast iron.
