Abstract: Boron is very commonly used in the nuclear reactor shields for the large neutron capture cross section, but the hard and brittle pure boron can not be processed easily. The wear and corrosion resistant coatings with high boron content have great the potential applications for the radiation protection of the nuclear industry. The Fe-based amorphous composite coating doped with high purity boron powder was prepared by the laser cladding method. The composition and microstructure of the composite coatings were investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) respectively, the micro-hardness of the coatings was also measured. The results show that the amorphous composite coatings with high boron content can be prepared by the laser cladding method, and the composite coatings were found to have the good bonding strength, the dense microstructure and no obvious cracks. The average micro-hardness of the coatings is up to 1 000HV0.1. At last, the relation between the composition and micro-structure was discussed in detail.
