Abstract: The metallic coating on the steel surface is the key to ensure the wetting of aluminum/steel in the cold metal transfer welding process. The wetting of 4043 aluminum alloy on galvanized steel and tin-plated steel was studied under the cold metal transfer conditions. When there is a metallic coating with a low melting point on the steel surface, the wettability improvement involves at least two aspects :(i) increasing the surface energy of the solid by exposing the surface with a higher surface energy; (ii) reducing the surface tension of the liquid by alloying the metal coating. The effect of the zinc coating is to reduce the interfacial heat (at least 5.1% heat dissipation) through the volatilization of zinc, thereby limiting the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer. Under the condition of low heat input, the effect of tin coating makes the system have better wettability.
