Material Data Sharing and Potential Application of Blockchain: a Review and Discussion

Abstract: In the field of materials, big data is becoming a new resource to promote the research of materials. Nowadays, there have been developed many material databases around the world, and the international community has also reached a consensus on promoting the openness and sharing of scientific data. Under the background,the Open Science Movement has been launched,and the scientific data FAIR principles has been proposed. However, several issues still challenge the practical progress of data sharing, such as material data sharing technology, intellectual property and data security, and material data sharing ecology. Blockchain provides new solutions for material data sharing due to decentralization and traceability. This paper provides a brief introduction of the present situation of material database sharing, introduces the development of the open science movement and FAIR principles, and puts forward the challenges faced by the current material data management and sharing. At the end of the paper, the application prospect of blockchain in material data sharing is discussed through the application principles and cases of blockchain.
