Studies on Foaming Properties and Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene/β-Cyclodextrin Foamed Composite

Abstract: In this study, polypropylene(PP) foamed composite was prepared using β-cyclodextrin (BC) as nucleating agent through a microcellular injection molding foaming process. The paper studied the effect of different contents of BC (0.25%—7%) on foamed PP composite’s foaming properties and mechanical properties by electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimeter. The results showed that the foaming behavior of PP was significantly improved with the BC content increasing. When BC content was 7%, the ideal cell morphology was obtained, the average diameter was 27.17 μm and the density was 1.01×107 cell/cm3. It was found that the crystallization temperature, crystallization rate of PP could be obviously improved by adding BC, which was advantageous to the crystallization of PP at higher temperature, and prevented the cell collapsing and dipping. Compared with polypropylene foaming materials, the tensile, bending and impact strength of foamed PP/BC composites increased by 21.2%, 7% and 12% respectively.
