Abstract Titanium dioxide (TiO2) coatings have potential applications in many important areas, like photocatalysis decomposition and photovoltaic cell, which have attracted extensive attention of researchers in recent years. Among various coating fabrication techniques, thermal spray processes can be used to prepare TiO2 coatings quickly and efficiently in large area and batch. The obtained coatings have good mechanical properties and the cost is relatively low, which make the thermal sprayed TiO2 coatings have broad prospects in industrial productions. However, the crystalline phase composition of TiO2 coatings is an important factor affecting the final properties of the coatings. The key point of controlling the crystalline phase composition is the regulation of metastable anatase phase. This paper reviews the thermal spraying technologies which are applied to deposit TiO2 coatings, such as the conventional powder thermal spray, liquid thermal spray and cold spray, etc. The optimization of important spraying parameters to achieve the objective of regulating anatase phase have been described. The effects of doping on anatase phase of TiO2 are discussed. Finally, the problems existing in regulating anatase phase of TiO2 coatings and the future research directions are proposed.
