Abstract: Electric wires and cables are indispensable basic equipment for the transmission of electric energy, information, and also for the manufacture of various electrical machinery, electrical appliances, automobiles and other equipment, and are necessary basic products in the electrified and information society. As the world’s largest wires and cables producer, China’s industrial output value in the electrical industry is second only to the automobile industry. As an important basic industry, the wires and cables industry is regarded as the “blood vessel” and “nerve” of the national economy. It plays a very important role in the national economy of China and shoulders the function of supporting the pillar industries of the national economy of all walks of life. Wires and cables are widely used in each domain of national economy, but in some special field of application, the traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), and other materials can not meet the request for utilization, but ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer (ECTFE) and its modified resins have excellent electric properties, fire prevention performance, heat resistance, weather resistance and chemical resis-tance, which can meet the requirements of use as wires and cables insulation and sheath material. Ethylene-trifluoroethylene copolymer (ECTFE) is a semi-crystalline, melt-processable fluoropolymer. At present, the main preparation methods of ECTFE at home and abroad include suspension polymerization, emulsion polymerization and solution polymerization. This paper mainly introduces the preparation of ECTFE at home and abroad, and the advantages and disadvantages of various preparation methods, and its application in electric wires and cables.
