Abstract: The anti-friction of two kinds of organo-molybdenum friction modifier MoDDP and MoDTC were investigated by using ball-disc reciprocating mode on the SRV IV oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester. The scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray detector (SEM/EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to probe the mechanism that diesel soot made the organo-molybdenum friction modifier efficiency. Results indicate that, diesel soot could significantly reduce the anti-friction property of MoDDP and MoDTC, making its anti-friction property unstable. Comparing the friction reduction effect of the two friction modifier in soot-contained diesel engine oil, MoDTC is supe-rior to MoDDP. The reason for the effect of diesel soot on anti-friction performance of the two kinds of organic molybdenum friction modifier is that:firstly, the soot will scrape the reaction film and destroy the surface of the friction pair; secondly, the soot changes the tribochemical reaction of the two antifriction agents, resulting in the formation of substances contained Mo-C.
