Abstract: Xanthan gum was utilized to modify nano-sized fumed silica particles and fabricate compound thixotropic agent. The influences on rheological performance, viscoelasticity and suspension stability of magnetorheological fluids (MRFs)by this compound thixotropic agent were investigated in this work. The results proved a stable organic xanthan gum layer coated on the surface of SiO2 particles. MRFs containing compound thixotropic agent presented increased shear stresses and yield stresses in the presence of magnetic field. The viscoelasticity tests revealed a wider linear viscoelastic range of MRFs in the absence of magnetic field. However, once a magnetic field was applied, stronger field-induced chains were likely to form inside the MRFs containing compound thixotropic agent, and as a consequence, the flow points and deformation energy of MRFs increased. Moreover, the suspension stabilities of MRFs were tested by directly observation, which indicated a further improvement in the suspension stability of MRFs containing the compound thixotropic agent.
