Abstract Accelerating the pace of coal bed methane exploration and utilization is of great significance for the facilitation of China’s energy structure adjustment. The gas adsorption performance of coal (rock) materials contains abundant coal reservoir information, which is crucial to the accurate evaluation of coal gas resource. This paper outlines the research situation of the gas adsorption mechanism of coal (rock) material, elaborates the unresolved issues in measuring the parameters of gas adsorption performance by high pressure capacity method, and discusses the relevant research stratagem. It mainly displays the findings for the dependences of gas adsorption performance on moisture, temperature, low frequency vibration, controlled microwave field and electric field, also indicates the research directions which worth further exploration.
