Improved Solidification Structure of in-situ Mg2Si/]Mg-.Al Composites by Applying Pulsed Magnetic Field: a Comparative Study |

Abstract The purpose of this work is to comparatively investigate the solidification structure of in situ Mg2Si/Mg-Al composites obtained under pulsed magnetic field (PMF). We designed three material compositions, i.e. Mg-9Al-3Si, Mg-9Al-6Si and Mg-9Al-9Si, and determined macroscopic and microscopic microstructure of the composites solidified under conventional circumstances and with a PMF applied via optical microscopic observation. The results showed that the introduction of PMF during solidification process leads to obvious reduction in porosity and shrin-kage cavity. Meanwhile, the primary Mg2Si phases transform from coarse dendrites into fine blocks or small dendrites and distribute uniformly, but α-Mg grains are not refined. In the pulse frequency range of 0—20 Hz, PMF with higher frequencies can achieve better grain refinement effect for primary Mg2Si phase in the Mg-9Al-6Si composite.

About author:: Xuefei Zhang, associate professor of Shenyang University. In 2007, Ph. D. graduated from Northeast University, majoring in material processing. His main research directions are research on processing technology and structure and properties of new materials. He has presided over the research of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (a sub-project) on “Basic Research on the Application of HA Coated Mg-Zn-Sr Alloy Biomaterials”. He has participated in the research of “Evolution of Precipitate Phase in Continuous ECAE Dynamic Aging Process of Aluminum Alloy Conductors and Mechanism of Performance Strengthening”, and has published more than 10 papers.Renguo Guan graduated from Northeast University in 2003 and received a doctorate. From March 2003 to April 2004, he studied postdoctoral in the Department of Materials, Puxiang University of Technology, Korea, and he is a professor of northeastern University. He presided over more than 20 projects of National 863 Program, National Excellent Youth Science Foundation, National Natural Science Foundation Key and Top Projects, Ministry of Education New Century Talents Program, Ministry of Education Fok Yingdong Young Teachers Foundation, and Provincial Science and Technology Program. Published more than 140 papers, SCI included more than 40, EI included more than 80, editor-in-chief published one academic monograph, participated in the publication of one translation. |
