Abstract Tribological behavior of diesel soot in 150SN base oil was investigated under different load by using ball-disc reciprocating mode on the SRV IV oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester. The three dimensional surface profilometer, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were utilized to investigate the friction reducing mechanism of diesel soot under high load. The results showed that load had great influence on the tribological property of diesel soot. Diesel soot could improve the anti-wear property of 150SN base oil under low load, while it could improve the anti-friction property under high load. The friction reducing mechanisms of load-induced diesel soot was related with its onion-like structure. The outer shell graphite carbon of diesel soot could be peeled off under high load, which formed new lubricating films on the friction pairs to reduce friction coefficient.
