Abstract Damping vibration absorbing technology is the most effective method to control vibration and noise. The semi-active control method with both the simplicity of passive control and the controllability of active control is hotspot in research. With the influence of shear thickening phenomenon, the stiffness and damping of shear thickening fluid are controllable. It enables shear thickening fluid to be employed in damping vibration absorbing technology. These structures have the advantages of fast response, no external energy consumption and strong adaptability. This review mainly introduces on basic properties of STF,shear thickening fluid damper and shear thickening fluid sandwich beams, as well as its research progress and damping mechanism. Furthermore, the future development of shear thickening fluid damper and shear thickening fluid sandwich beams is discussed.

About author:: Ping Wangreceived her B.S. degree in textile engineering from Wuhan Textile University in 2017. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the institute of college of textile science and engineering, Jiangnan University under the supervision of prof. Kun Qian. Her research has focused on the application of shear thickening fluid on damping vibration absorbing technology.
Kun Qian, doctor of engineering, professor, doctoral supervisor. At present, he is director of institute of technical textiles of Jiangnan University, deputy director of industrial textiles Professional Committee of China Textile Engineering Society and member of Expert Committee of China Textile Industry Association. It is mainly engaged in the research and development of structu-ral functional integration textile composite, the design and development of prefabricated parts and production equipment, the research of mechanical properties and structural optimization of structural composite, and the research of high-performance and lightweight technology of fiber-reinforced composite. In recent years, he has presided over more than 20 national key R & D projects, two machine projects, various
science and technology projects above provincial/ministerial level, and more than 30 enterprise entrusted projects. It has won nearly 20 science and technology progress awards of China Textile Industry Association and Jiangsu Province; it has passed more than 30 provincial and ministerial level science and technology achievements appraisal projects, authorized national invention and 8 utility model patents. He has published more than 100 high-level academic papers, of which 50 are included in SCI and EI. Main/participated in the compilation of 3 provincial and ministerial planning textbooks for general higher education.
