| Effect of Aluminum Hypophosphite on Flame Retardancy and Mechanical Property of Bamboo Charcoal/Polylactic Acid Composites |

Abstract In this study, bamboo charcoal/polylactic acid (BC/PLA) composite materials were prepared by melt blending method, and the composite materials were flame retarded by aluminum hypophosphite (AHP), and the amount of AHP added to flame retardant BC/PLA composite materials was studied. The bamboo charcoal-based composites and their carbon residue after combustion were tested by universal testing machine, limited oxygen index, vertical combustion, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The result shows that the appropriate addition of AHP can improve the bending strength and the flexural modulus. The bending performance can reach up to 74.4 MPa when the addition content of AHP is 20wt%. No dripping is observed during the limited oxygen index (LOI) test for BC/PLA compo-sites with 25wt% AHP. The results indicate that the UL94 flammability rating can reach a grade of UL94 V-0, and LOI of composites is improved by 29.3vol%. The carbon layer formed on the surface of the composites during the combustion plays an effective flame retardant role.
