Abstract The solid solubility of alloying element Sn in the Mg matrix was influenced by temperature severely, especially, the Mg2Sn intermetallic compound with high strength, high hardness and thermal stability which was formed easily. So it has gained great attention in theoretical study and practical application. The influence of Sn on the microstructure and mechanical properties of pure magnesium and magnesium alloys were summarized based on Mg, Mg-Al-Zn, Mg-Mn, Mg-Zn, Mg-Li alloys series. The effect of Sn on the corrosion,electrochemistry properties of magnesium alloys are analyzed. Finally, applications of Sn in magnesium alloys were prospected.
