| Influences of Welding Parameters on Mechanical Properties of Joints and Welding Defects of X65 Pipeline Tubes by Flash Butt Welding |

Abstract Influences of welding parameters on mechanical properties of joints for flash butt welding of X65 pipeline tubes were analyzed by the orthogonal test. In the test, welding parameters including the excitation flash stage burnt, stable flash stage burnt, welding current of stable flash stage and flash speed of accelerating flash stage were examined, while the strength, plasticity, toughness and impact toughness of joints were used as the evaluation index of welding process. The optimal welding parameters were obtained. The metallographic analysis of joints indicates that the high heat input in weld zone (WZ) and partial heat affected zone (HAZ) result in the coarsening of grains of joints and formation of Widmanstatten structure, thus the impact toughness of joints decreases. The Nick-Break tests show that the broken mode of joints is the brittle cleavage fracture because of intensive cracks distributed across flat spots and their boundaries in joints. The optimized acceleration speed of the flash phase is beneficial for the reduction of defects in the weld zone and the enforcement of mechanical properties of joints.
