Abstract The butt joint test of different materials of copper and steel was conducted by using DC magnetic field assisted TIG welding. The influence of DC magnetic field on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TIG welding joint was analyzed. The results show that when the magnetic field intensity B=10 mT, the appearance of the joint is good and the weld has no porosity and other defects. With the increase of magnetic field strength, the tensile strength of the joint first increases and then decreases. When B=10 mT, the tensile strength of the joint reached the highest (194.6 MPa), which increased by 25.79% compared with no magnetic field. The micro-vickers hardness of the joint fusion zone increased by 8.8%. The joint was composed of steel base material, steel side heat affected zone, steel side fusion zone, weld zone, copper side heat affected zone and copper base material. The fusion zone tissue from a large globular particles (Ⅰ layer) and strip granules (Ⅱ layer) of copper steel solid solution.When B=10 mT, Ⅰ layer spherical iron-rich phase appeared obvious reunion phenomenon and containing copper particles increased, gyrate (α+ε) bipolar tissue increasing much and curl, iron substrate from mesh into small strips;Ⅱ layer iron-rich phase disappeared and (α+ε) bipolar thickness of the organization thinned.The increase of the curl and the aggregation of Fe rich phase in the fusion zone enhanced the mechanical bite and the second phase strengthening. It is the reason that the strength and hardness of the joint improve.

He is now the vice president of Nanchang Hangkong University.
