Effects of Peppermint Oil Microcapsule Finishing on Wearability of Polyester Fabric |

Abstract In terms of fabric modification, microcapsule finishing is used in the aroma, antibacterial, flame retardant, ultraviolet-proof, etc. modifications which are achieved by the function of the core materials, while there are less researches to study the effects of microcapsule structure and adhesive on the fabric’s wearability. Peppermint oil microcapsule finishing is frequently used to modify the fabrics’ aroma and cool properties. This work will study the change of wearability including moisture comfort, hand feeling, breaking strength and whiteness of polyester fabric after peppermint oil microcapsules finishing. The results of SEM and FTIR show that the microcapsules finishing is successful and polyacrylic acid with film structure is adhered on the fiber surface. By testing the fabrics performance before and after microcapsules finishing, it’s found that the moisture management ability, air permeability and moisture permeability are significantly improved, but the comprehensive handle and whiteness are opposite and the breaking strength is hardly changed. Alkali and plasma pretreatment can improve the moisture comfort of fabric with microcapsules finishing by increasing the weight gain rate, but will further reduce the wrinkle recovery rate and whiteness.
