Abstract The intermediate of 4-methoxyphenyl phosphate dichloride (MPC) was synthesized from 4-methoxyphenol and phosphorus oxychloride, and then poly (p-methoxyphenoxyphosphate-4,4'-isopropyl bisphenol ester (PMIP) was obtained by melt polymerization. The molecular structure of PMIP was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H,13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance. The molecular weight of PMIP was analysed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). In addition, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and PMIP were applied in vinyl ester resin (VER) to prepare PMIP-VER and PMIP/APP-VER composites. The flame retardancy and the thermal stability of PMIP/APP-VER composites were analyzed by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion (UL-94) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that when 20% (mass fraction) of PMIP/APP is added, the LOI is 24.5%, that UL-94 can reach class V-0, and that the residual carbon rate was 36.60%, which effectively improves the coking efficiency of VER.
