Abstract Magnetic alloys are suggested to be used as structural materials for passive shut-down system in sodium-cooled fast reactor. When the temperature in the reactor exceeds the Curie temperature of the magnetic alloy, the control rod connected with magnetic alloy would insert into core to shut down the reactor. This paper presents the investigation on the compatibility of Fe-Ni magnetic alloy with high temperature sodium at 530 ℃, 560 ℃ and 600 ℃, respectively. After corrosion tests, a series of examinations including morphology analysis, corrosion rate evaluation, SEM analysis were performed. The results showed that, the weight of all specimens increased slightly after testing, and the average weight gain increased as the temperature rose. According to morphology analysis and EDS line scan analysis, a manganese oxide layer formed on the surface of samples, which could prevent the steel elements dissolving into sodium. No pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion were detected, the materials showed a good corrosion resistance in sodium at high temperature.
