Abstract The effects of T6I6 treatment on the precipitation and fatigue behaviour of Al-Si-Mg-Cu cast aluminum alloy were investigated by using hardness test, mechanical tensile test, fatigue test and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the main strengthening-phases of the T6 peak-aged and T6I6 peak-aged alloy were GP zone and β″ precipitates. Compared with T6 peak-aged alloy, the yield strength and tensile strength of the T6I6 peak-aged alloy increased by 7.3 MPa and 11.5 MPa, respectively, and its elongation also increased by 4.1%. In addition, under the same loading condition, the T6I6 peak-aged alloy exhibited a longer fatigue life. At the maximum stress of 175 MPa, the fatigue life of the T6I6 peak-aged alloy was enhanced by 63.0% compared with that of T6 peak-aged alloy.
