Abstract The width and stability are the most important properties for prepreg and they are also the difficult points of prepreg manufactured by hot-melt method. Based on the machine vision technology and the current hot-melt method, the overall plan to produce prepreg for automated fiber placement (AFP) was designed and then the experimental platform was constructed to research the effect of impregnation process on the spread quality of prepreg. The impregnation process of prepreg and its influence factors such as heating temperature of resin, velocity of prepreg, tension of prepreg and thickness of resin film were analyzed by orthogonal experiment and the group of optimal factors were acquired. This research shows that thickness of resin film is the most important factor, the second is heating temperature of resin, the third is tension of prepreg and the last is pulling velocity of fiber. The group of optimal factors are heating temperature of resin is 90 ℃, thickness of coating is 0.6 mm, tension of prepreg is 2 N and velocity of prepreg is 4 m/min for the cyanate ester.
