Synthesis and Characterization of Spherical Corundum Abrasive by Sol-Spray Granulation Method |

Abstract The aluminum sol was prepared by using pseudo-boehmite and nitric acid as precursor and peptizer.By designing orthogonal experiment with the gelling time as the index, the gelation process and spherical corundum abrasive by sol-spray granulation was discussed. Results show that the most important influence factor on the process and properties of the gelation system was the temperature, followed by the ratio of acid to aluminum and the initial solid content.The optimum conditions for the preparation of aluminum sol were confirmed with the solution temperature of 70 ℃, the ratio of acid to aluminum (n(H+)/n(AlOOH)) of 0.07, and the initial solid content of 35wt%.Compared with the corundum abrasive prepared by high temperature melting method, the corundum abrasive prepared by sol spray granulation method has smaller grain size, more complete crystal form, more uniform particle size distribution and better sphericity.The corundum abrasive prepared by different processes was prepared into a polishing liquid with a solid content of 5% to polish the stainless steel workpiece. Results show that the corundum abrasive prepared by sol spray granulation method has better consistency with the surface of the workpiece after polishing, and the surface roughness is 0.045 μm,reduced by 76.6%.
