Abstract Recycling of waste indium tin oxide (ITO) is of great importance both for sustainable utilization of indium resource and environmental protection. This review firstly gives a rough estimation of the recycling potential of waste ITO, and subsequently introduces the recent research and developments with respect to the recovery technology of indium from waste ITO, which mainly includes hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical techniques, along with a comparative analysis of their respective advantages and disadvantages. Based on the above discussion, the main problems during the recycling process, as well as the corresponding countermeasures are proposed. The paper finally ends with a sketch of the outlook for the field’s future trends, suggesting the significance of the innovation of effective and environment-friendly recycling process.
