Abstract An ultraviolet excited blue-light emitting phosphor α-Ba₃P₄O₁₃:Eu²⁺has been synthesized through a solid state reaction method at a relatively low temperature of 840 ℃. The phase purity, luminescence properties and thermal stability of the phosphors have been investigated. Under the excitation of 360 nm ultraviolet light, intense blue emission could be observed and the emission spectrum of α-Ba₃P₄O₁₃:Eu²⁺consisted of a broad and asymmetric emission band centered at ~439 nm. Based on the analysis of the excitation and emission spectra, luminescence decay curves and crystal structure, the broad and asymmetric band could be ascribed to that Eu²⁺ ions occupy multiple different Ba²⁺ sites in α-Ba₃P₄O₁₃. Moreover, the optimal Eu²⁺ concentration was about 6 mol%, and the dominant concentration quenching mechanism of Eu²⁺ was the dipole-dipole interaction in this case. Interestingly, α-Ba₃P₄O₁₃:Eu²⁺showed better thermal stability than that of commercial green phosphor (Ba, Sr)₂SiO₄:Eu²⁺. The results suggested that α-Ba₃P₄O₁₃:Eu²⁺ blue phosphor could find potential application in ultraviolet excited WLEDs.
