Abstract Dendritic and hyperbranched polyamidoamine as well as their modified derivatives are kinds of nano-materials that characterized as treelike and appeared unique architecture. They could be utilized as demulsifier, flocculating agent, oil-displacing agent, antiscale etc. in the oilfield technology. Herein, the dendrimers, hyperbranched polyamidoamines and their modified derivatives which could efficiently separate oil from the emulsions are discussed with emphasis. Moreover, the mechanism of these polya-midoamines used as demulsification and flocculating agent is briefly introduced. In the end, an outlook of possible future researches on the issue of magnetic dendritic polymers that could be recyclable demulsifier materials is involved as well.
