Abstract The purpose of this study is to reveal the effect of surfactant (SYDK-type) on the high- and low-temperature properties of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CR). We prepared two series of samples of 60-mesh and mixed-mesh crumb rubber modified asphalt, both of which have va-rious surfactant contents (0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%), and conducted dynamic shear rheological test (DSR) and bending creep test (BBR). The results showed that the addition of SYDK surfactant improves the high-temperature performance of both 60-mesh and mixed-mesh crumb rubber modified asphalt samples, in which the latter achieve greater performance improvements and the mixed-mesh crumb rubber modified asphalt sample with an SYDK content of 0.6% exhibits the most satisfactory high-temperature performance. For the low temperature performance, the addition of SYDK surfactant benefits the stress relaxation ability of 60mesh-crumb rubber modified asphalt, but nevertheless makes the mixed-mesh crumb rubber modified asphalt prone to crack at lower temperatures. In particular, this negative effect gets minimized when the content of SYDK is 0.6%. According to our research, by weighing the changes in both high- and low-temperature performances, the optimum dosage of surfactant SYDK for warm-mixed crumb rubber modified asphalt is suggested to be 0.6%.
