Study on a Good Smoke Suppressive Phosphaphenanthrene Flame Retardant Exploited in Epoxy Resin |

Abstract In this work, a flame retardant based on an efficient phosphaphenanthrene derivative, 10-(2,5-dihydroxydiphenyl)-10-hydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-sulfide, was synthesized via two-step reaction. The structure of the obtained compound was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Thereafter, the flame retardant properties and thermal properties of epoxy resins cured by aforesaid compound were investigated by limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94), thermogravimetry (TG) and cone calorimetry (CONE), respectively. The results indicated that a small amount of DOPS-NQ and APP can effectively inhibit the release of heat and smoke generation and promote the LOI and carbon residue of EP composites. Especially, when DOPS-NQ/APP content was 20%, the LOI value of the flame-retardant EP composite increased to 32.8%. Moreover, CONE test revealed 92% reduction in TSP and 91% reduction in SPR compared to the untreated epoxy resins; the pHRR, THR and CO were also reduced by 81.6%, 67.1%, 93.3%, respectively, and the residues increased by 46.5%. At the same time, the addition of DOPS-NQ also improves the mechanical properties of EP composites drama-tically.

From September 2017 to June 2020, she studied at the Guizhou Normal University, focusing on the research of flame retardant and flame retardant materials. Daming Ban, received his Ph.D. degree in polymer chemistry and physics from Sichuan University in 2004. He is currently a professor in School of Chemistry and Materials Science of Guizhou Normal University. He is engaged in flame retardant and technology. His research interests are phosphorus based flame retardant and its application. |
