Abstract In recent years, black phosphorus (BP) with honeycomb pleated sheet structure has shown potential applications in the field of flame-retar-dant polymer composite materials. In this work, G-BP was prepared by high-energy ball-milling method, and the structure was characterized by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The effect of graphene/black phosphorus nanocomposite particles (G-BP) on the flame retardancy and thermal stability of epoxy resin was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL 94 vertical burning test. Thermal stability was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that when 2% G-BP was added to epoxy resin, the carbon residue increased from 14.8% to 25.3% at high temperature, the LOI increased to 25.5%, and V1 level was achieved. When the addition amount was 5%, the LOI of EP/G-BP reached 27.5%, and passed the V0 level. The improvement of flame retardancy is owing to the synergistic effect of the gas-phase and condensed-phase flame retardant actions of G-BP.
