Abstract Low concentration basic nickel carbonate was used to load sargassum-based activated carbon on nickel oxide surface to improve the gravimetric capacitance of activated carbon. Based on the pyrolysis characteristics of basic nickel carbonate, the pseudocapacitance was introduced, and the effect of modification on the original pore structure of activated carbon was reduced, thus, the double layer capacitance of activated carbon was better retained while the pseudo capacitance was introduced. The effects of nickel oxide loading on pore structure and electrochemical properties of sargassum-based activated carbon were studied. The results show that: after nickel oxide loading modification, activated carbon retains the original pore structure well, and loads a large amount of nano-scale nickel oxide on the surface of pore structure evenly. After modification, the pseudocapacitance was introduced into the activated carbon electrode material. The gravimetric capacitance of activated carbon has been significantly improved, and with the increase of nickel oxide loading concentration, the electrochemical properties of activated carbon has gradually improved.
