Abstract The influence of temperature and time on variational principle of Ca content in A356 recycled scrap during melting process was investigated. The results indicated that the variations of Ca content showed conic laws which kept decreasing gradually with the holding time. The change rates of Ca content increased linearly at low temperature and decreased linearly at high temperature. With the melting temperature increasing, the decrease rates of Ca content sped up and the Ca content reached the lowest value (6×10-6) within 3 hours at 760 ℃。By thermodynamic and kinetic analysis, we learned Ca content was reduced mainly by oxidation in first stage and deoxidizing Al2O3 through diffusion to the melt surface lately. The reaction started with alumina would be shorter when the temperature was improved. The oxidation rate of Ca changes with temperature, which meet the law of K=578 749exp[-176 500/(RT)] in the early melting process at 660-720 ℃.
