Abstract Bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane, a natural polymer material, possesses a unique three-dimensional fibrous network and excellent mechanical strength. In this study, BC membrane was employed as a separator in zinc-iodine batteries, effectively capturing iodine species and significantly suppressing the shuttling of triiodide ions (I3-). The zinc-iodine battery utilizing the BC membrane demonstrated a high specific capacity of 177 mAh·g-1 and a long lifespan exceeding 1 500 cycles, markedly outperforming the counterpart using a conventional glass fiber (GF) separator. This work offers a promising strategy for the application of biomaterials in electrochemical energy storage systems, highlighting the broad potential of BC membranes in sustainable energy technologies.
