Abstract The grain boundary diffusion process (GBDP) of heavy rare earth elements such as Dy and Tb into Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets is the most important approach to enhance the magnets with high coercive force. This paper briefly introduces the concept of GBDP and the application status in the manufacture of high-performance sintered Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets. The latest representative research results in recent years are analyzed, and several possible problems that need to be overcome are presented. This review has certain guiding significance for the further development of high performances Nd-Fe-B magnetic materials.
