Abstract The effect of etherification and graft copolymerization of dual-modified solid waste residue (D-MPR) on the distribution of bound water in sludge were investigated, which can improve the sludge dewatering performance. The dynamic analysis of the properties of the treatment agent, the solid-liquid phase of the treated sludge and the release of the bound water was investigated, and the binding energy of the bound water was used to represent the mechanism of the process of sludge volume reduction. The results showed that D-MPR could destroy the stable colloidal system of sludge, promote the formation of large flocs in the sludge, enhance the removal of “difficult-to-release” bound water in sludge, and improve the dewatering performance of sludge. The addition of D-MPR with 12‰—15‰ DS can remove 93.98% of the bound water from the sludge, and the Eb of the sludge bound water increases to about 289 kJ/kg after the treatment. All the capillary and surface bound water in the sludge are removed, and 6% of intracellular bound water is left, in the sludge. In addition, a multivariate regression model was developed here to show that the EPS content and sludge specific resistance SRF affects the release of sludge bound water, and the increase of sludge floc volume is favorable to sludge dewatering.
