Melt Pool Size Extraction Method in Laser Directed Energy Deposition Based on Edge Gradient Search |

Abstract Aiming at the problem of being difficult in melt pool width extraction in laser directed energy deposition due to the interference of weak edges, a method for extracting the edge based on edge gradient search was presented based on the difference of gray gradient change of melt pool edge. In order to extract accurate melt pool edge size. First, the melt pool roughly edge was obtained by preprocessing the melt pool image based on mathematical morphology. Then the weak edge gradient threshold was determined through experiments. Finally, the edge gradient search model was adopted to further segmentation the melt pool roughly edge to obtain the precise segmentation edge, and the ellipse fitting method was used to fit the edge of fine segmentation to obtain the weld pool width. Experiment results indicate that the melt pool width can be detected accurately.
