Effect of SAP on the Hydration Kinetics of Cement Paste at Different Curing Temperature |

Abstract The curing temperature will affect the hydration kinetics of cement, as well as the characteristics of water absorption and release of super absorbent polymer (SAP). At the same time, the water absorption and release of SAP in cement paste will also affect the hydration kinetics of cement. However, there are few studies on the effect of SAP on the hydration kinetics of cement paste at different curing temperatures. Therefore, the effect of SAP with different particle sizes on the hydration kinetics of cement paste with high water to cement ratio (HWC, W/C=0.42) and low water to cement ratio (LWC, W/C=0.30) at 20 ℃, 40 ℃ and 60 ℃ was investigated in this work. The results show that SAP has a greater effect on the hydration of LWC paste than that of HWC paste at 20 ℃ and 40 ℃. Meanwhile, the addition of SAP will delay the hydration of cement but increase the main hydration exothermic peak at 60 ℃. Through the analysis of hydration kinetics model, it is found that the effect of SAP on the hydration kinetics of cement paste is affected by the curing temperature, the water-cement ratio and the particle size of SAP. In summary, curing temperature and SAP have a synergistic effect on hydration kinetics of cement paste.
