Abstract The foamed ceramics was prepared by complex foaming process using porcelain tile residues as the raw material. The mass ratio of complex agents was determined by the orthogonal test, and the complex foaming mechanism and the firing system were investigated. It was shown that the temperature range of pore-forming was broadened when the complex agent foaming acted mutually, and that the homogeneous pore structure could be formed. Samples in investigation were prepared by adding complex foaming agents in accordance with the mass fraction (%) of carbon∶calcium carbonate∶iron(Ⅲ) oxide∶silicon carbide=1∶3∶1.5∶1, and being calcined at 1 160 ℃ for 100 min. The closed porosity of the foamed ceramics is 62.94%, and its pore diameters are 1.2—1.9 mm. The volume density, water absorption, and thermal conductivity of the resultant are 369 kg/m³, 0.44%, and 0.079 W/(m·K) respectively.
