Abstract Portable electronic devices are developing towards flexibility, lightweight, miniaturization and intelligence with the rapid development of manufacturing technology. Thus, flexible electronic devices that can deform consistently including bending, folding, twisting and stretching have emerged. As a key component of new flexible electronic equipment, flexible secondary batteries have received more and more attention. Traditional secondary batteries cannot meet the requirements of flexible electronic devices. Therefore, the development of flexible secondary batteries has important scientific value and practical significance. In recent years, flexible secondary batteries have made some substantial progress. Flexible electrodes based on metal materials and carbon materials play an important role in secondary batteries; gel-based polymer electrolytes have also been extensively studied due to their excellent mechanical properties, high safety, and good electrical conductivity; besides, the current collector materials can also meet the needs for flexibility by some reasonable structural designs. This paper summarizes the research progress of flexible secondary batteries from three aspects, electrode materials, electrolyte materials and current collectors. The latest research results of flexible electrode materials are focused, while some materials that can construct the key components of flexible secondary batteries and their future research directions are proposed. The bottlenecks restricting the development and commercialization of flexible secondary batteries are discussed. Hope it can provide references for the further development of flexible secondary batteries.
