Abstract Polymer materials have broad application prospects. However, flame retardancy is one of factors limiting their application. Polysilsesquioxane (POSS) has unique molecular designability and has received extensive attention in the field of polymer flame retardancy in recent years. Aiming at the research status of POSS, it is reviewed for flame retardant mechanism and general synthesis. The synthetic and application of phosphorus-containing oligomeric silsesquioxane (phosphorus-containing POSS) in polymers are mainly discussed. The common phosphorus-containing POSS can be divided into five categories according to their structural morphology: complete cage, incomplete cage, cage-trapezoid, POSS-based copolymer, and POSS-based functionalized graphene oxide. At the same time, their influence on the flame retardancy of different polymers was discussed. The results show that polymer with different phosphorus-containing POSS can exhibit excellent flame retardancy.

About author:: Xiaoxia Wang was graduated from Beijing Institute of Technology in July 2019 with a master's degree. During the master's degree, she majored in “functional polymer and flame retardant materials”, and her research topic was “phosphorus-containing oligomeric silsesquioxane and its flame retardant application”. She have published 2 SCI TOP papers and 2 international conference papers as the first author among the students, and applied for 6 patents as the first inventor among the students. She was awarded the title of National Scholarship, School-level Excellent Graduation Thesis and Beijing Excellent Graduate.Yong Wang graduated with a BSc (Sci.) in Material Chemistry from School of Materials Science & Enginee-ring, Beijing Institute of Technology, an MSc in mechanical engineering in the material industries from the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, and an EngD in industrial and systems engineering from faculty of engineering, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He joined The Guangdong R&D Center for Technological Economy as a Research Fellow in 2015. He has been appointed as the director of the major projects management unit since Oct. 2020. His research interests are mainly in the area of Science & Technology Evaluation, Science & Technology Intelligence Research, Science & Techno-logy Policy. As a principal investigator, he has obtained about RMB 1 million from government to support his research. He has published over 10 journal papers.
