Abstract The continuously increasing CO₂ emission, as all known harmful to the global environment and responsible for the greenhouse effect, have raised worldwide researches aiming to reduce CO₂ content in the atmosphere or even to effectively utilize CO₂. One of the various potential approaches is using N-heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs) and its metal complexes to activate CO₂, and convert it into chemical raw materials or fuels so as to achieve the purpose of recycling carbon resources. This review gives a summary of the research progress in applying NHC and its complexes with transition metals Cu, Pd and Ag to the activating CO₂ and catalyzing reactions of CO₂ and organic compounds such as alkenes and alkynes. It ends with a critical analysis of the developmental prospects of this field.

About author:: Enli Chen received her B.S. degree in applied chemistry from Wuhan University of Technology (China) in 2015. She is currently pursuing her M.A. at College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Life Sciences, Wuhan University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Zhizhong Xie. Her research has focused on theoretical study on reduction mechanism of carbon dioxide catalyzed by metal carbene.
Zhizhong Xie received his B.E. degree in chemistry from Anhui Normal University in 2001 and received his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Beijing Normal University in 2006. After a near three-year postdoctoral research at Nanyang University of Technology in Singapore, he is currently a full professor in Wuhan University of Technology. His research interest is computational chemistry, mainly in the field of reaction mechanism.
Junxin Duan received her B.E. degree in chemistry from Changzhi University in 2008 and received her Ph.D. degree in material chemistry from Wuhan University of Technology in 2019. She is currently a lab technician in Wuhan University of Technology. Her research inte-rest is computational chemistry, mainly in the field of reaction mechanism.
