Fractal Dimension and Multifractal Spectrum of Surface Morphology of Corroded Steel |

Abstract To investigate the surface topography of steel plate with different corrosion levels, specimens were obtained by the accelerated corrosion tests in a salt spray test chamber and divided into 10 groups according to corrosion ages. The three-dimensional data of the surface topography of the corroded steel specimens are collected by the 3D non-contact profilometers. The fractal and multifractal characteristics of the surface topography of corroded steel specimens were calculated by differential box-counting method, and the variation of fractal characteristics with corrosion age were analyzed. The results show the fractal dimension D gradually increases and then exhibits an undulating change with the increase of corrosion time;the multifractal spectral width Δα fluctuates and Δf rises in the law of “continuous increase-decrease”.

About author:: Shanhua Xureceived his Ph.D. degree in 2003 from Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology. He is currently a professor, doctoral supervisor and academic leader in structural engineering of Xi’an University of Architecture ande Technology. His research focuses on the durability of concrete structures and steel stuctures, and he has published more than 100 journal papers. He has taken charge of several scientific research projects, including 4 scientific research projects financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 project financially supported by National Key Research and Development Program of China, and 1 project financially supported by Chinese Postdoctoral Science Foundation. Min Xiais a doctoral candidates in structural enginee-ring of the School of Civil Engineering, Xi’an Univer-sity of Architecture and Technology. She is mainly engaged in the study of the durability of steel structures. |
