Abstract Persulfate is widely used in soil and groundwater remediation due to its excellent properties. In the previous research, scholars found that under different activation conditions, the types of free radicals produced by persulfate decomposition are different, and the effects of degrading organic pollutants are also different. This paper reviews the research progress of several activation techniques of persulfate in soil and groundwater remediation at home and abroad, including thermal activation, UV activation, transition metal ion activation, alkali activation, ultrasonic activation and activation of carbonaceous materials. The effects of different types of transition metal ions on the activation of persulfate to degrade organic pollutants are described in detail, including zero-valent iron, metal oxides, bimetals, complexes of iron and chelating agents, and composites with nano-scale metals. The research status of the combined technology of persulfate is briefly described, including the combination of various activation modes of persulfate and the combination of persulfate with electrochemical technology, microorganisms and surfactants. Finally, the problems existing in the persulfate research are summarized, and suggestions for its future development are put forward.
