Abstract The electromagnetic parameters of metamaterial thin films with coated carbonyl iron as micro-structure material were adjusted by changing the content of absorbent and the model of absorbing structure was obtained by CST simulation. With increasing the content of the coated absor-bent from 10% to 80%, the dielectric loss of the metamaterial film decreased and the magnetic loss increased, which led to better impedance matching, higher absorption peak strength and redshift of the position. After salt spray test, both the electromagnetic parameters and microwave absorbing properties of the coated microwave absorber had no obvious changes, which indicated that the microwave absorber had excellent corrosion resistance. With metamaterial thin films as absorbing functional layer, the peak strength of absorbing wave increased, which was of great significance to the design of broadband absorbers.
