Abstract Hydrogen density level is the key factor in shielding materials for neutron shield application, some hydrogen-rich metal hydrides show strong neutron shielding capability and good thermal stability in high temperature environment, using these kind metal hydrides as neutron shielding material compare with tradition neutron shielding materials can effectively reduce the volume/weight of neutron shield, which are important candidate shielding materials for small modular nuclear reactors and space nuclear reactors. Through literature survey, research status of lithium hydride, zirconium hydride, titanium hydride neutron shielding ability and irradiation stability are reviewed. It indicates that the radiation swelling of metal hydride under irradiation condition is the key point to influence the use of metal hydrides as neutron radiation shielding material. The factors leading to radiation swelling of lithium hydride and zirconium hydride are summarized and analyzed. It provides useful information for the future research of metal hydride as neutron shielding material.
