Abstract FeSiB amorphous alloys feature low price and excellent soft magnetic properties, numerous attentions have been paid to the researches and applications of FeSiB alloys. Usually, a forth element is introduced or precursor annealing is adopted in order to enhance the processability, production efficiency and amorphous stability of FeSiB alloy. In this research work, we attempted to introduce Er elements to ameliorate the structure and amorphous properties of FeSiB alloy. Fe75-xB8Si17Erx (x=0—0.8)(at%) multi-component alloys have been prepared by suction casting technique using chilled copper die. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were employed to characterize the phase composition, microstructure and magnetic properties of the FeSiBEr alloys, and the effect of Er addition on microstructure evolution of the alloy was investigated. As could be seen from the results, when the Er content increased from 0% to 0.4%, Er played a role in altering the amount and the size of α-Fe grains in the alloy. The amorphous state of the alloy was formed when Er content reached 0.5, which was evidenced by microscopic visualization. In addition, excessive Er (above 0.6%) addition would drive the alloy towards hypereutectic point, resulting in the formation of Fe-B and Fe-Si crystalline phases, further deteriorating amorphous forming ability of the alloy.
