Abstract To solve the problem of retardation existing in the setting and hardening process of styrene-acrylic ester/cement (SAE-cement) composite cementitious material, nano-silica served as setting modifying admixture in this work. By measuring the setting time and initial strength of nano-silica modified SAE-cement composite cementitious material, the effect of nano-silica on the setting and hardening process of composite cementitious material was analyzed. To explore the work mechanism of nano-silica, the hydration heat of nano-silica modified SAE-cement composite cementitious material was determined by isothermal calorimetry, and its hydration products were examined by X-ray diffraction. The results show that the addition of nano-silica can effectively promote the setting and hardening process of composite cementitious materials, and the effect of 1.25% dosages is the most significant. It also indicates that adding nano-silica accelerates the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide by promoting the hydration of tricalcium aluminate and tricalcium silicate, shortens the hydration induction period and acceleration period of the composite cementitious material, accelerates the hydration process, thereby shortening the setting time and increasing the early strength.

About author:: Ru Wangobtained her Ph.D. degree in materials science from Sichuan University in 2003. She had conducted postdoctoral research in Tongji University and Vienna University of Technology in Austria, and has been serving in Tongji University since returning to China. In 2010—2011, she visited Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Columbia University in the City of New York, USA. She is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor of Tongji University. Her team’s research interests are the basic theory and application of polymer/cement based composites, focusing on the chemical reaction process of polymer/cement based composites, and discussing its relationship with the microstructure evolution of materials as well as its influence on physical and mechanical properties, thus proposing the feasibility of making rational use of polymers to prepare new cement based functional materials for construction from the perspectives of science, safety and environmental protection. With the support of scientific funds such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, she has scored great successes in this field and has published more than 100 academic papers relevant to polymer/cement based compo-sites, most of which were included in SCI and EI. She is the editor-in-Chief of the English book Progress in Polymers in Concrete, and the co-editor of the Chinese book Testing Methods for Raw materials and Products of Dry-mixed Mortar and Commercial Mortar. Recent findings and insights from the research have attracted the attention of international colleagues, and she has been invited to make keynote and main speeaches at international academic conferences for many times. She has been serving as a board member in the International Congress on Polymers in Concrete (ICPIC) for many years. In 2018, she was awarded the “Owen Nutt Award” by ICPIC and was elected as the Vice President of ICPIC board.
